Family Lunch

family lunch

In the streets of Burgio there is a slow flow of simple things and traditions that are handed down.

While an old lady looks out from her balcony and a group of children improvise a soccer match, the scent of fried eggplants and fresh tomato sauce invades the streets of Burgio. A group of men play cards in the village circle and the church bell punctuates the day. To enter the slow pace of the daily life of this Sicilian country means getting to know its deepest soul.

The itinerary first leads to the Mother Church and then on to discover the ancient tradition of ceramics and bells. The Caravella workshop reminds us that know-how is transmitted as experience from father to son, a workshop that still retains an ancient charm, and where the ancient art of Burgio ceramics continues to thrive. Leisureliness and tradition also are what accompanies a visit to the bell foundry, one of the oldest in Italy. Here the bells are made as in the past, starting from the “soul”, the inner part made with bricks and clay. To get to know the true identity of a place you need to sit at the table and discover the pleasure of a family lunch, the good dishes alternating with conversation that mix together memories and daily life.

To be part of the small community of Sant’Angelo Muxaro is to live an unforgettable human and relational experience.

There are countries where time flows slowly, where we must stop and listen to understand its richness. Relationships arise spontaneously as well as conversations that reveal the life of a community and its daily routines.

From the central square of the village through the alleys and courtyards you can become acquainted with the life of this small village and be part of this family. Signora Maria, an English speaker, kneads and sells bread to the small community every day and between one chat and another reveals the secrets of this bakery and the ancient art of bread making. Entering the homes instead means getting to know the traditions, such as foraging, the art of knowing how to recognize and pick edible spontaneous herbs that grow in nature, or the culinary heritage made up of simple and genuine dishes. WINE ROADS

WINE ROADS

Whoever drinks wine has a sense of aesthetics, beauty and of knowing how to live.

A bottle of wine always contains the story of a family and a relationship with the region. The wines speak of the region and it is important to taste a glass and at the same time understand how the origin of the grapes, the soil and the micro-climate influenced the trend of the vintage.“ A journey on the link shared between the vines and the Etna area, between the parts and the whole. ”

In the Etna area, south-western wines are more concentrated, while south-eastern wines near the sea tend to be slender and northern wines are more austere. The cellars’ owners accompany the guests in wine tasting, becoming interpreters of their land, their passion and their choices as producers. An aesthetic experience and at the same time a path that investigates the link between the vines and Etna.

FAMIATA

FAMIATA

The kitchen unites, creates relationship, light-heartedness, treasured moments shared with friends.

Sicily has a wealth of traditions and memories related to food that still continue to exist and there are words that go beyond their literal meaning to describe a situation. The “famiata” is literally the moment when a fire is lit in a wood oven.

The word encompasses the practice of meeting together around the wood-burning oven, kneading the specialties of the Sicilian tradition and chatting like family. In this old farmhouse, everything has remained as in the most ancient traditions; all you have to do is put your hands into the dough to forget about everything and let yourself go in the pleasure of company and good food.

the wisdom of plants
From each plant it is possible to obtain a story, search for its spirit and thoroughly investigate its properties.

Among the Sicani mountains there is a man who took refuge in a wooden house and made it a place where to enjoy his passions: plants, flowers, medicinal herbs, writing and art. The spaces we create speak of us, reflect our world. Aldo in his home has many stories to tell:

fantasy stories written in volumes which he shows to those who are curious enough to sit and listen, as well as stories about his commitment to the environment but above all, those that show his love of plants. A walk in the garden is an opportunity to get to know aromatic and medicinal plants and taste some flowers used to prepare special recipes. The scents of rosemary, mint, thyme, wild fennel, calamint, sage lead into the magic circle; an outdoor sculpture park created by Aldo over the years. As in a Tolkien story, you enter a magical world accompanied by the wisdom of a man who has dedicated his life to his passion for plants.

THE SHEPHERD’S EYES
There are professions and traditions that are handed down from father to son and remain unchanged.

Some jobs as a tradition from the past to present remain unchanged and are handed down like prized possessions. These are trades but also lifestyles that take shape in that inland Sicily, which is fascinating and still unknown. For six generations, the profession of shepherd has been handed down from father to son. It is a job made up of gestures that are repeated on a regular basis and that begin at dawn.

“ There are professions and traditions that are handed down from father to son and remain unchanged. ”

To characterize the soundscape of this place are whistles, the whispered calls and the Sicilian dialect; a magical and incomprehensible language. An experience that is above all a meeting with an ancient craft, which is still practiced according to tradition. From the pastures, the work shifts to the small dairy where cheese is produced; an art that requires skilled hands, skill and dedication.

a class on making hot chocolate
Modica was a county where many noble families lived who fell in love with hot chocolate in a cup, prepared with hot water, chocolate and chilli.

Modica’s hot chocolate tradition is also handed down today and along the streets during some periods of the year you can still smell the scent of cocoa and hear the sound of beating; a movement that must be repeated to prepare the chocolate bar. On the balconies of Modica’s main street, nobles drank hot chocolate in a cup; a tradition that over time has transformed and made this baroque region of Sicily the home of chocolate.

Modica’s families still continue to produce chocolate, following a few simple rules and creating new combinations and flavors. The scent and taste of cocoa beans, Sicily’s history and the joy of doing things together, are the elements of this journey through an ancient art that still continues to exist.

“ During Christmas or Easter the sound of beating can be heard throughout Modica’s streets: as a tradition from the past to present many people still continue to prepare hot chocolate at home. ”
